Egypt hosted for the first time on October 22, 2009 the launch of the report "Information Economy 2009" that was published by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). This report discussed the extent to which countries in the world make use of ICT applications (telephone and mobile phone, Internet and high-speed Internet) and how to overcome the "digital divide" in general and in particular between developing and developed countries regarding the use of Internet and broadband.
The main recommendations that the report included was the importance of promoting investment in the ICT infrastructure in order to consolidate efforts and create more internet penetration. The report pointed out as well the importance of directing more support to small and medium-sized companies, as well as micro as it represents the vast majority of companies in developing countries and the major source of employment in these countries and to promote policies directed to supporting the use of communications and information technology to advance the growth and development.
